Karsh Kale is a producer and songwriter who has spent his career developing fusions of Indian music with mainstream pop and electronica, and he is also a brilliant player of the tabla, which are drums common to a lot of Indian music. He was born in England and grew up in New York, where he was exposed to Indian classical and folk music, rock and hip-hop.
This must-see video features Kale on tabla in a haunting version of a song written by Salim Merchant and Sultan Khan called Kajar Bin Kare. Merchant is a proficient composer and this wonderful performance features his and Kale's style of fusion, using programmed beats and live Western and Indian instruments - particularly the sarangi (a bowed string instrument). There's also a bansuri - a type of flute.

Kale and Merchant collaborated with British sitar player Anoushka Shankar on her album Breathing Under Water - you can see two tracks below, one featuring Sting and the other Shankar's half-sister Norah Jones.
